Welcome to My New Finding Myself, Foster-Adopt Parenting, Infertility, Home Renovation, Life, and Faith Blog

Jack and I took our first adoption class- our first baby step into considering adoption, about 6 years ago. We accepted our first foster placement 3.5 years ago. We adopted our foster daughter Kelley 1.5 years ago. Adoption is beautiful and redemptive, and it is difficult and broken. Our family is still not the same as many friends’ and family members’ families, not the same as our naïve hopes and dreams. Our family is an ongoing work in progress.

I have often wished we had been better informed and prepared before starting our Foster Care Adoption journey. I wish I had known how to TRULY childproof my home for a child the caseworker referred to as “a feral child.” I wish I had been more aware of the common diagnoses that come with adoption-related trauma, and how those diagnoses would impact all of us and all our relationships for the rest of our lives. I wish I had known how the system would fight us every step of the way to adoption, and how the brokenness would not magically become happily ever after on adoption day.

I am here to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of adoption, and some of the lessons we have learned along the way. Welcome to our story!
